Impacting Dyslexia Education Awareness and Support

News

TAKS is no more, and was replaced by the STARRS assessments. Below, please find a link to FAQs about the test generally and one regarding the Dyslexia Bundle.

 Bundled Accommodations:

The Bundle will now involve two accommodations: reading responses options, and extra time (it doesn't describe taking the test over two days, however). Reading proper nouns from a list has been eliminated as an option. In addition, these accommodations extend through High School.

In addition, a bill has been passed in the legislature this session and is effective immediately. Broadly speaking, it requires that educators from this year forward who are certified in Texas receive training during college regarding the identification and remediation of dyslexia. Further, educators who teach students with dyslexia are required to receive ongoing training on dyslexia (and online courses are authorized by this law).

 Other provisions include

  • a provision that school districts (as directed by a TEA plan) provide technology in the classroom for children with dyslexia. (budget considerations can be taken into effect).
  • limitations on retesting students with dyslexia for reasons of accommodations unless previous testing has been re-examined.
  • limitations on institutions of higher education requiring testing for dyslexia unless previous testing has been re-examined.
